IPMT Plate Mounting Tape: Even Impression, Clean Release

Published 4 min read

Engineered for mounting plates in flexographic and letterpress printing — even impression across the plate, a firm hold at press speed, and clean release after the run.

Plate mounting tape is the double-sided foam tape that fixes a photopolymer printing plate to the plate cylinder or sleeve. It does three jobs at once: it holds the plate in register for the whole run, it cushions the impression so the plate transfers ink evenly, and it lets the plate come off cleanly when the job is finished. IPMT is Fortis Industrial’s own double-sided plate mounting tape for flexographic and letterpress presses.

The liner is where mounting goes right or wrong. On a flat liner, air trapped between the adhesive and the plate has nowhere to go, and it becomes the bubble that prints as a light patch or a missing dot. IPMT uses a corrugated liner that leaves fine air-escape channels in the adhesive surface: as you squeegee the tape down, air leaves along those channels and the plate sits flat on the foam. For thickness, hardness and adhesion values, ask us for the technical data sheet.

Why choose IPMT

  • Even impression

The cushioned carrier evens out press impression for clean, consistent dots.

  • Holds at speed

High-grab adhesive keeps plate edges locked down for the whole run.

  • Clean release

Peels off plate and cylinder with no residue and no plate damage.

  • Bubble-free mounting

The corrugated liner leaves air-escape channels in the adhesive — bubbles press out, not trapped.

Installation steps

Eight steps in three phases — clean, mount, demount. Clean surfaces and a firm squeegee pass do more for print quality than anything else in the job.

Clean (2) · Mount (4) · Demount (2)

  1. Wiping the back of a printing plate with an IPA bottle beside it

    Clean

    Plate cleaning

Wipe the back of the plate with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and let it dry completely.

  2. Wiping a plate cylinder with a cloth and IPA

    Clean

    Cylinder cleaning

Wipe the cylinder or sleeve with IPA and let it dry completely.

  3. Roll of tape being applied onto the plate cylinder

    MountStep 1

    Tape application

Lay the tape onto the clean cylinder, liner side up, without stretching it.

  4. Squeegee pressing the liner down on the taped cylinder

    MountStep 2

    Squeegee the liner

Squeegee firmly over the liner so trapped air escapes through the corrugated channels.

  5. Liner being peeled away from the tape on the cylinder

    MountStep 3

    Peel the liner

Peel the liner away to expose the adhesive.

  6. Printing plate being lowered onto the taped cylinder

    MountStep 4

    Plate mounting

Lay the plate on, then press it down with a rubber roller.

  7. Printing plate being lifted off the cylinder after the run

    Demount

    Plate removal

After the run, lift the plate off the tape.

  8. Tape being peeled off the cylinder, leaving it clean

    Demount

    Tape removal

Peel the tape off the cylinder — it comes away with no residue.

Two ways to mount

Option A: Tape the plate first

Apply tape to the back of the plate, then mount the plate on the cylinder.

Option B: Tape the cylinder first

Wrap tape around the cylinder, then lay the plate on. Never overlap the joint.

Both methods depend on the same three things: surfaces cleaned with IPA and fully dry, a firm squeegee pass over the liner before it is peeled, and a rubber roller over the plate once it is down. Whichever order your pressroom uses, keep the tape joint butted and never overlapped — an overlap leaves a step under the plate.

How to order

Tell us your press, plate thickness and the widths you run, and we will confirm the right IPMT roll size, stock position and price within one working day. IPMT is one part of the Fortis adhesive tape range — the splicing, process, tear, sealing, repulpable and core-starting tapes are linked below, and the tesa® Softprint series remains available for jobs that call for a specific foam hardness.

Frequently asked questions

What is a corrugated liner?

The liner is the release paper that covers the adhesive until the plate goes on. A corrugated liner has a fine ridged pattern that leaves matching channels in the adhesive surface. When you squeegee the tape down, air escapes through those channels instead of being trapped under the plate, so the mounted plate sits flat without bubbles.

Can I reuse IPMT after demounting a plate?

No. Plate mounting tape is a single-use product. Once a plate has been removed the adhesive has been stretched and picked up ink mist and dust, and the air-escape channels are gone. Strip the tape off the cylinder, clean the cylinder with IPA and apply a fresh length for the next plate.

Which presses is IPMT for?

IPMT is made for mounting plates in flexographic and letterpress printing, on plate cylinders and sleeves. If you are unsure whether it suits your press, plate or substrate, send us the details and we will confirm it or recommend an alternative from the tesa® Softprint range.
